Allow me to translate the jumble of text:

The key things I look for is:
Colors correspond with the pony (Specifically the eye color)
Name combines well with cutie mark (implying other things in the personality if possible)
Simplicity and un cluttered
At minimum semi symmetrical or geometric enough in shape that being flipped isn't that noticeable
The design balances well with the character
Extra colors do not clash or are too different from the ponies main colors (more of a saturation thing)

I do a few idea drawings no matter how bad I think they are and pick and choose which parts of each one I like. I then go through A final "rule" checkover and ask questions about the design. For example the line going along the box came into question because I didn't want an outline. I figured out I wouldn't need the lines at all if I made the brass "shimmer" in a 3d perspective. I try to find every possible detail I can about my idea before finalising anything. Now I just need to digitise the concept and see if it works
